May Updates: Building Foundations and Supporting Communities

Hello Govcampers! Since introducing our trustee groups last month, we have been busy behind the scenes working on several projects to strengthen UKGovCamp. Here is what we are currently working on.
Forming a Legal Foundation for UKGC
We have agreed to register UKGovCamp as a CIC (Community Interest Company Limited by Guarantee). This provides us with a formal legal structure to better manage activities such as renting venues and issuing grants, all while operating as a dedicated non-profit.
Our first priority following this decision is to develop a formal AoA (Articles of Association). This ensures the organisation has a solid legal foundation. We are nearly finished with the drafting process and will soon register officially with Companies House. Once that is complete, the document will be available for everyone to view on our website.
Reviewing our Digital Estate
We are also conducting a full review and restructure of our digital tools. While we have historically relied on Google, we are exploring ways to diversify our setup this year. A key goal is to reduce our reliance on US-dominated products and find a balance that works better for our long-term needs.
Revamping the Website
The website is getting a much-needed makeover. We have received several enquiries about accessing discussions and session grids from previous years, so we are working on adding a library of content of the past events.
Accessibility is also a top issue. We are making sure that the renewed site aligns with WCAG 2.2 standards. We also want the site to be useful for you, so if you have any suggestions on features or content you would like to see, please comment below or get in touch on our Slack Channel.
Supporting the Unconference Community
Finally, we are proud to announce that we have provided grants to three brilliant organisations:
- Charity Camp: An unconference exploring how digital tools can help the third sector better serve their communities.
- DeliverCon: A staple event for delivery professionals in and around the public sector.
- Policy Camp: A space for those interested in the future of policy and community connection.
These events are run by fantastic people and are completely free to attend. We highly recommend checking them out and getting involved!
